I Am Who I Am: Yahweh's Name Forever
Scripture is quoted from the 1599 Geneva Bible with modernized spelling (words and word order unchanged), with the names Yahweh and Yashua restored throughout.
Peter was a hypocrite. Matthew was an extortionist. Thomas was a doubter. Paul was a terrorist.
The point of that list isn't shame. It's hope. Scripture is full of people who were the wrong kind of person for the work Yahweh handed them, and He used them anyway. It isn't about who you are. It's about who He is.
"Who am I?"
When Yahweh sent Moses to Pharaoh, Moses did what most of us do when the call feels too big. He looked at himself.
"But Moses said unto Yahweh, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?" (Exodus 3:11)
Yahweh didn't answer by listing Moses's strengths. He answered with His own presence:
"And he answered, Certainly I will be with thee: and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee, After that thou hast brought the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve Yahweh upon this Mountain." (Exodus 3:12)
Moses said, I'm not enough. Yahweh said, I will be with thee.
"What is his Name?"
Moses still had another question. If Israel asked who sent him, what Name should he give?
"Then Moses said unto Yahweh, Behold, when I shall come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, Yahweh of your fathers hath sent me unto you: if they say unto me, What is his Name? what shall I say unto them?" (Exodus 3:13)
"And Yahweh answered Moses, I Am That I Am. Also he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you." (Exodus 3:14)
"And Yahweh spake further unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, Yahweh of your fathers, Yahweh of Abraham, Yahweh of Izhak, and Yahweh of Jacob hath sent me unto you: this is my Name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all ages." (Exodus 3:15)
That is not a title. It is a Name, and He said it would stand for ever.
The four letters
In Hebrew the Name is written with four letters: יהוה. English letters usually render them YHWH. Many say Yahweh. The Name was treated with such reverence that, for long seasons, Jewish readers would not speak it aloud when they read the Scriptures, and said Adonai ("Lord") instead. English Bibles followed that custom and printed LORD in small capitals wherever the Hebrew has the Name. That is why so many believers have never heard it said.
Some rabbis have also noticed that the Name, spoken gently, can sound like breathing: Yah on the inhale, weh on the exhale. Whether you take that as wordplay or worship, the picture still lands. Our first breath at birth and our last breath at death move the same air. Scripture says: "Yahweh also made the man of the dust of the ground, and breathed in his face breath of life" (Genesis 2:7). He is not far from the life in your lungs.
Moses said "I'm not," Yahweh said "I Am"
That is the whole sermon in one line.
Moses looked at his past, his fear and his weakness and asked, Who am I? Yahweh answered with who He is: I Am That I Am, and I will be with thee.
Peter's failure was not final. Matthew's past was not final. Thomas's doubt was not final. Paul's violence was not final. Yashua met each of them where they were and remade them.
If you feel disqualified today, hear the bush again. Yahweh is not waiting for you to become impressive. He already is who He is, and He still sends people who know they aren't enough.
Your past is real. But it is not final. Yahweh is I Am, and He will be with you.
